Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
How they were out

Mashrafe Mortaza rocked the top order with 4 for 44

A determined Bangladesh recorded a historic triumph over New Zealand with a seven-wicket victory, their first ever over the world's No. 4 side. The loss was a huge blow for New Zealand, who were looking at a clean sweep to take second spot on the rankings. Junaid Siddique, along with Mohammad Ashraful, made sure Bangladesh capitalised on the momentum given by Mashrafe Mortaza' bowling which helped restrict New Zealand to a modest target.

25 overs Bangladesh 90 for 2 (Junaid 43*, Ashraful 1*) need a further 112 to beat New Zealand 201 for 9 (Oram 57, Mortaza 4-44)

Bangladesh inched steadily towards a probable historic triumph over New Zealand at the halfway mark with Junaid Siddique leading the chase with some studious batting. Junaid remained calm despite the early fall of Tamim Iqbal, his opening partner, in the fourth over. Rightly he understood it was no time for a rush of blood, and focused on his game.

Even if the Bangladesh run rate was similar to their opponent's after 15 overs (New Zealand were 62 while Bangladesh made 55) the hosts had more wickets in hand, losing just one wicket compared to New Zealand's four. Runs came mostly in singles with the occasional boundary. Junaid also found good support from Mushfiqur Rahim who brought the team's 50 with a long six on the leg side.

The pair added 67 before Mushfiqur fell going for another big hit. Taking on Scott Styris, he failed to get the desired elevation to clear deep midwicket, falling for a steady 30. Mohammad Ashraful had the chance to settle himself in and play a supporting role to Junaid, who looked set for a half-century.

50 overs: New Zealand 201 for 9 (Oram 57, Mortaza 4-44, Razzaq 3-33) v Bangladesh

A patient half-century by Jacob Oram helped New Zealand rebuild from an embarrassing 79 for 6 against a new-look Bangladesh side playing their first game after the ICL exodus. Mashrafe Mortaza ripped through the New Zealand top order, who appeared rusty after their only practice game was washed out, to put the visitors on the back foot.

Oram arrived with New Zealand reeling at 65 for 5, having lost four wickets for 10 runs after the second Powerplay. But Oram, along with his captain Daniel Vettori, stopped the slide with a 70-run partnership, the highest for the seventh wicket in matches between these two sides.

Oram initially found it difficult to adjust to the nature of the pitch and was happy to rotate the strike and allow Vettori to play the big shots. Once he found his rhythm he didn't let any scoring opportunities go waste, sweeping powerfully whenever the spinners Abdur Razzak and Naeem Islam pitched it on the leg side. He also charged left-arm spinner Shakib Al Hasan and lofted him over long-on for his only six.

It was a cautious beginning for New Zealand as Brendon McCullum and Jesse Ryder decided to wait for the bad balls rather than go on the aggressive straightaway. Syed Rasel, the left-armer, pitched it full in his first over and Ryder eased into a couple of fluent drives to the ropes. A few overs later Ryder capitalised on Shahadat Hossain's short deliveries: first he hooked a six over square leg and pulled over midwicket for a four later in the over.

Though his teammates were erratic, Mortaza applied the pressure at the other end with a tight, unbroken eight-over spell. He initially exploited the movement available and later put pressure on the batsmen with his accuracy.

Bangladesh's bowlers had turned in a similarly impressive performance in their previous ODI against Australia but their batsmen had then failed to overhaul a modest target.

Bangladesh win by 7 wickets to seal the first ODI. Ashraful grabbing the stumps as his teams runs onto the field. A wonderful win helped by Junaid Siddique, Mushfiqur Rahim and Ashraful. Junaid Siddique (Man-of-the-Match) was involved in a wonderful partnership of 109 runs for the third wicket with Ashraful, who also played positively to bring them home.

Do join us for the second ODI on october 11th. For now this is Binoy George along with Bill Andersson signing off.
