Wreaths mark Zia's birthday

Dhaka, Jan 19 (bdprem.com) – BNP leaders and workers Saturday placed wreaths at the grave of the late president Ziaur Rahman at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar on his 72nd birth anniversary.

Zia, who founded the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, was born in 1936 in Bagbari village under Gabtoli upazila of Bogra district.

The BNP, its front organisations and different socio-cultural organisations, had laid out programmes to celebrate the day, but both factions of the BNP cancelled discussions after party chairperson Khaleda Zia's mother Toyeba Majumder died.

A group of BNP leaders and workers, led by BNP secretary general Khandaker Delwar Hossain placed a wreath at Zia's grave around 10:00am.

Zia was assassinated in an abortive military coup in Chittagong on May 30, 1981.
