A year on from 1/11, Iajuddin praises govt

Dhaka, Jan 10 (bdprem.com) – The caretaker government has played "a pivotal role in establishing the rule of law and freeing the country of corruption and deprivation", President Iajuddin Ahmed said Thursday in a message marking the anniversary of the '1/11 changeover'.

He also said it was his "conviction that a free, fair and credible general election would be held by 2008" as per the Election Commission's roadmap.

The rule of law and stability are the important preconditions for overall development of a country, Iajuddin said.

"The present caretaker government has been playing a pivotal role in establishing the rule of law and making country free from corruptions and deprivation since its assumption of power in January 2007."

Iajuddin went on to list some of the successful activities during the last one year of the administration led by chief adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed—including the separation of the judiciary from the executive, the stance against corruption, voter enrollment and preparing for national ID cards.

Iajuddin said the moves had been acclaimed by all at home and abroad.

The president added "eliminating terrorism", and the strengthening of relations with friendly countries, as laudable actions of the present caretaker government.

"It is also appreciable that the government has successfully faced the repeated floods and devastating cyclone and provided all-out assistance for the affected people of the country," he said.

Iajuddin said he believed the holding of elections by 2008 would "expedite and consolidate our democratic process".
