| Dhaka, Jan 10 (bdprem.com) – A special court dealing with high-profile political corruption Thursday sentenced former BNP state minister Salauddin Ahmed to seven years in jail for taking bribes from a businessman. Judge Mohammad Ashraf Hossain of the Special Judge's Court-5 delivered the verdict against the former state minister for communications in a makeshift courtroom on the Sangsad Bhaban premises. The judge also fined Salauddin Tk 1 crore, and if he fails to pay the amount he has to stay in jail for another year. The court also ordered the police to confiscate the bribed amount. The court released businessman Qazi Salimul Huq, owner of GQ Ball Pen Industries, as he was not found guilty. On May 29, deputy director of the Anticorruption Commission Shafiqul Islam filed the case against Salauddin and Salimul. According to case details, Salauddin took bribe from the owner of a construction firm, Mir Zahir Hossain, promising to give some government contracts. The deal was done using Salimul's bank account. Security officials arrested Salauddin on Feb 6. |
