Ex-army man set to launch political party

Dhaka, Dec 4 (bdprem.com) – Retired major general Syed Muhammad Ibrahim launches a political party Tuesday—a third during the state of emergency.

He is set to announce the launch of Bangladesh Kalyan Party from a morning press conference at Hotel Imperial Convention Centre on Bangabandhu Avenue.

Speaking to bdnews24.com in a Monday night interview, Ibrahim said he would "transcend" his identity as former army officer, thanks to the new party.

Ibrahim, who will be the chairman of the party, said: "I am going to take a big challenge. I may fail, but somebody has to come forward."

Ibrahim suggested that future politics should be inspired by the culture of cooperation, adding: "The things that have divided the nation must be removed. Politics must be guided by the principles of tolerance, honesty and courage."

Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus pulled back from politics after an aborted launch of Nagorik Shakti (Citizen's Power).

In July, Ferdous Ahmed Quarishi launched Progressive Democratic Party, followed by the National People's Party of former Jatiya Party leader Shawkat Hossain Nilu.
