Babul freed on bail

Dhaka, Dec 5 (bdprem.com) -- Nurul Islam Babul, Jamuna Group chairman and owner of the Bangla-language daily Jugantor, was released on bail Wednesday.

The High Court on Nov 27 ordered his release on bail. He is now under treatment at BIRDEM's Ibrahim Cardiac Hospital.

Deputy inspector general of prisons Shamsul Haider Siddiqui told bdprem Wednesday: "Jail authorities have received the bail order. There is no other case against him. He has been freed and the jail police have been withdrawn from the hospital."

However, on Wednesday night, members of intelligence agencies in plainclothes and at least four policemen in uniform were found on guard at the hospital. Journalists were not allowed in.

Joint forces arrested Babul under the emergency powers rules on Feb 23 in front of the Anticorruption Commission where he had gone to submit his wealth statement.
