| Dhaka, November 26 (bdprem.com) – Police Monday remanded BNP's senior joint secretary general Tarique Rahman for five days in custody for questioning in two extortion cases. Md Ehsanul Haque, additional chief metropolitan magistrate, Dhaka placed the former prime minister Khaleda Zia's elder on a three-day remand after hearing an appeal to take him on a seven-day remand. The remand petition was made in connection with the Tk 4.89 crore extortion case filed against Tarique on May 4 by Syed Abu Shahed Sahel. The case filed with Gulshan Police Station initially named only Giasuddin Al Mamun, Tarique's businessman and friend as the accused. On May 14, Tarique was also shown arrested in the case. Tarique's lawyers opposed the remand appeal on the grounds that the move to question him after the expiry of the investigation in the case was illegal. In another case involving Tk 16 lakh extortion, the court of metropolitan magistrate Habibur Rahman Siddiqui placed him into two days' remand after police asked for the court's permission to quiz him for seven days. Khan Mohammed Aftab Uddin, director of Reja Constructions, filed the case against Mamun on March 27. Tarique was implicated in the case on April 13 on the basis of confessional statements of Mamun. |
