SC stays Hasina's bail in Bangabandhu Memorial Trust case

Dhaka, November 26 (bdprem.com) — The Supreme Court Monday stayed Sheikh Hasina's bail granted by the High Court in a corruption case involving the Bangabandhu Memorial Trust.

The Appellate Division simultaneously halted the High Court stay order on the case proceedings.

An Appellate Division full bench headed by the chief justice Md Ruhul Amin issued the orders after hearing the petitions submitted by the government and the Anticorruption Commission.

The High Court granted former prime minister Hasina bail in the case on Nov 4, and stayed the case proceedings the same day.

The government and the ACC filed appeals on Nov 8 with the Appellate Division against the High Court order.

The ACC filed a case on Sept 2 against Awami League chief Hasina and six others, charging them with accepting donations of Tk 3 crore for the Bangabandhu Memorial Trust in exchange for granting special facilities to set up three private sector power projects.

The other accused include former power and energy secretary Towfique-e-Elahi Chowdhury, former PDB chairman Nooruddin Mahmud Kamal, Summit Industries and Mercantile Corporation Ltd managing director Muhammad Aziz Khan and United Group chairman Hasan Mahmud Raja.

The government included the case for trial under emergency powers rules on Sept 20.

On Oct 28, Hasina petitioned to the High Court calling into question the legality of transferring the case for trial under EPR. At the same time, she appealed for bail in the case.

Hasina was arrested by joint forces in her home on July 16 in an extortion case filed by businessman Azam Jahangir Chowdhury and detained in the special jail the same day.
